Frequently Asked Questions

We know there may be some questions and concerns with the updated packaging.
Here are some answers and videos to help!

How do I open my package without damaging the outer packaging significantly?

There are 3 great ways to open your package:

- Double Fold and Tear: For the cleanest open, fold the package along the perforated line once, then fold it again. Press it against a flat surface and tear along the line. This method keeps the package intact, making it ideal for a potential return!
- Quick Open
: If you’re in a hurry, you can simply tear along the perforation without folding. The package will open, though it may be less tidy and won’t be as clean for returns.
- Use Scissors: For a very clean open, cut along the dotted line with scissors. This method also works well for prepping for returns!

Watch the video below for a step-by-step guide on these methods.

What's the best way to prep my package for returns?

To ensure your return package arrives safely back at JTV, we recommend using tape on all four sides to reseal the mailer, especially for higher-value items like jewelry.

Either long or short pieces of tape work well, as the size of the jewelry box is large enough to prevent slipping out!

This extra step provides additional security as packages typically pass through several terminals on its way back to us, and can result in less tampering and/or unexpected opens.

The majority of return packages sent back with our previous poly bubble mailer were also sealed with tape, and tape has proven effective.

Watch the video below for a quick guide on preparing your package for return shipping.

Will my package fit into my mailbox?

Yes, your package is designed with flexibility in mind!

We understand that in certain instances plastic can be a bit more flexible than paper, so we developed special scoring on our paper to allow bendability while still offering sufficient protection.

Additionally, we’ve configured our material and equipment which now allows us to make smaller overall packages that will fit more easily in mailboxes.

Watch the video below to learn more about how this design helps with fitting your package into mailboxes.

How water-resistant is my package?

Arrow icon

We know weather can be unpredictable, so we’ve designed the packaging to handle even rainy seasons!

The mailer is constructed with an outer liner, a corrugated inner liner, and a thin latex lining that team up to form a water repellent surface. The mailers pass through our mechanical closing equipment which creates consistent seals.

In our internal testing, we fully submerged the package multiple times in a big bowl of water which still left both a completely dry jewelry box and interior of the mailer!

Check out the video below to see our water resistance test in action.

How sustainable is using paper for these mailers?

We know that while plastic isn’t ideal, there’s also a concern about cutting down trees for paper.

But here’s what’s interesting: the more demand there is for paper, the more trees are planted to keep up with sustainable forestry practices.

In fact, U.S. forests grow about twice as much volume each year as is harvested, with a net annual increase of roughly 225 billion cubic feet in growing stock. So, as we continue using paper, we’re actually helping to support the growth and maintenance of healthy forests.

How durable is the new packaging?

Arrow icon

We understand that package durability is a top concern, so we’ve broken it down into two categories upon arrival:

- Package Condition: In our recent tests, 92% of customers received their package fully intact, with no tears. Some minor wear or tears were reported by 7% of respondents, and 1% experienced noticeable package damage.
- Product Condition: Over 99% of customers reported that their products arrived in perfect condition, with less than 1% experiencing slight damage.

While zero packaging and product damage is ideal, this performance is comparable to that of our old plastic mailers. We could have opted for thicker packaging but that would make it harder to fit into mailboxes, and would add extra weight and emissions to the package.

All in all, if your package arrived safely this time, you can feel confident it will hold up well in the future, too!

Check out the video below for a closer look at our packaging’s durability and the numbers behind the scenes.

Why did we switch to paper-based mailers?

Arrow icon

For years, one of the main concerns from customers has been the amount of excess packaging. Finding a recyclable solution became a priority, especially considering that, while plastic bubble mailers might be placed in a curbside recycling bin, they rarely end up being recycled.

Switching to paper mailers significantly reduces our plastic use—saving around 250,000 pounds of plastic each year. That’s more than 10 million water bottles’ worth! This shift also results in substantial oil and waste savings, making it a big step forward in reducing our environmental impact.

Watch the video below for more on the benefits of this sustainable change.

What improvements were made to the last round of paper packaging?

Arrow icon

We’ve taken customer feedback to heart and made three key updates to improve the packaging experience:

- Simplified Perforation: We’ve reduced the perforation from two lines to one, making it much easier and clearer for customers to open without confusion.
- Larger Instructions: The opening instructions were too small in the original design. The new packaging now features instructions that are about three times larger for better visibility.
- Enhanced Material and Smaller Packages: We’ve upgraded the material to improve how it runs through our machinery. This allows us to produce slightly smaller, more efficiently packed mailers.

Check out the video below for a closer look at these improvements.
